Teaching in a nutshell

Chemistry has long been one of the subjects that are not very popular (not only) among the young generation. And yet chemistry is so interesting and absolutely indispensable for today and the future. Obviously, those who can change the negative view of chemistry include teachers, chemistry teachers!
Training of chemistry teachers has a long tradition at the University of Ostrava. Our graduates are successful in changing the pointless claim of uninteresting and difficult discipline – and we see this not only in the ever-increasing interest in studying chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry has been cooperating with the whole school sector for a long time – we already show the children in kindergartens secrets and interesting chemistry, primary and secondary school teachers visit us with their pupils and students, we organize summer schools, chemical Olympiads, excursions to laboratories. Our students live not only by studying, but are also involved in a number of popularization activities – Earth Day, Scientists’ Night, St. Nicholas Party etc.
In any case, the study of chemistry teaching is a challenge – a challenge for those who are not subject to senseless rumors who want to be well trained for their future career, who want to gain the profession of teacher who is (despite various peripetia) still highly valued by the public.

Specialization Teaching chemistry for secondary schools has to be studied in combination with another master’s teaching specialization – there are available specializations at the Faculty of Science (teaching of biology, physics, geography, informatics, mathematics), as well as at the Faculty of Philosophy and Education. More detailed information on currently offered combinations for the admission procedure is available on the faculty website https://prf.osu.cz/studijniobory/. On these pages you will also find an overview of the courses you will be studying.
In the combination of specializations, Teaching of Chemistry for Secondary Schools is referred to as either “maior” or “minor”. According to the new Higher Education Act, this designation means, among other things, that in the “maior” specialization the student chooses his / her final (diploma) thesis.

What do we expect from you?

The follow-up Master’s study builds on the foundations of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills acquired during the bachelor’s degree in both chemistry and pedagogy and psychology.

The entire follow-up master’s degree program is aimed at preparing you well for the profession of chemistry teacher in all areas – both theoretical and practical.
